Call Your Mom

Just shortly after entering 2024, my mom was diagnosed with cancer. Something I never imagined saying aloud. I have always longed for a way to use my artwork to shed light on health and wellness. And at a time where everything feels wrong, it feels like the right time to do so. This project is titled, Call Your Mom, a selection of apparel for my mom, in support of her fight with breast cancer. A percentage of sales will be donated to Living Beyond Breast Cancer.

A message…

Unfortunately, we live in a world where proper healthcare information, testing, and support does not come easily. Studies show that women are not heard or taken seriously when presenting their concerns to their healthcare providers. This often results in late diagnoses and/or mis-diagnoses.

“This year, the Journal of the American Heart Association reported that women who visited emergency departments with chest pain waited 29 percent longer than men to be evaluated for possible heart attacks.

An analysis of 981 emergency room visits showed that women with acute abdominal pain were up to 25 percent less likely than their male counterparts to be treated with powerful opioid painkillers.

Another study showed that middle-aged women with chest pain and other symptoms of heart disease were twice as likely to be diagnosed with a mental illness compared with men who had the same symptoms.”

Living Beyond Breast Cancer is a national nonprofit that connects people with trusted information and a community of support. Receiving a diagnosis and fighting cancer is a lonely, frustrating, and scary journey. LBBC provides those struggling with a helpline, conferences and webinars, online support groups, volunteer opportunities, and funding. Their commitment to a vision of a world where no one impacted by breast cancer feels abandoned and uninformed makes me hopeful for the future and for my mom’s journey.
